Hello Fashionistas—it’s been awhile! As said when I signed off last fall, I’ve been busy becoming the new fund raising coordinator for Young Scholars Charter School, an innovative middle school, providing wonderful foundations & futures for Philadelphia’s inner-city youth. An important passion beyond fashion for sure, but I’ve missed my readers and my writing—and I’m back! Rather than every week, I’ll be writing once a month—hoping you’ll continue to enjoy reading about the newest trends and how to wear them at 50ish!!

DADDY’S GIRL: Surprising my dad for his birthday; off to Palm Beach to celebrate my dad’s 86th in my ivory/multi-color embellished cashmere sweater jacket from, sand silk flowy blouse from and ivory silk pants from

In order to tell you about what’s hot in resort wear, I just traveled to Boca Raton to celebrate my dad’s 86th birthday, as well as bring you the latest scoop. Even if the coming weeks take you no further than your doorstep, it is fun to start to shop for—and perhaps indulge in—a few pieces for resort and spring. Every look is available at every price point, the fun starts the moment you visit your favorite store or website.

RAIN OR SHINE—BLACK & WHITE, ALWAYS RIGHT: Black cashmere crew neck sweater with faux pearl embellishment & white flared jeans, both at; Joseph Ribkoff  black silk tunic at Linda Golden, Haverford, white flared jeans at

I am not an efficient packer—I like options—and it’s a good thing. Last year, it was 55 degrees and windy the entire trip, I lived in cashmere sweaters with white jeans (a look I love); this year the weather was wonderful, a pretty top with those same white jeans was all I needed.

COLORS OF SAND & SUNSETS: Gucci blush cashmere sweater, flared pants & blue floral handbag; Badgley Mischka fucshia silk ruffled dress, both at

No matter if weather is warm or cool, resort fashion always follows the beautiful scenery; choose hues the color of warm sand and magnificent sunsets. Start with something white, “the color” for spring. A great top, a fabulous pair of wider pants, a smashing handbag. Add something neutral, the shade of sand in the morning, or something gold or silver, as sand appears at dusk. Then add a pop of bright orange, yellow, or pink. The shades of sunrise over the beach. An easy palette to pack, mix, and match.

LET IT FLOW: Tularosa floral print silk dress from; Trina Turk coral silk dress from

The 60’s bohemian/70’s disco-glam look continues right through resort, spring, and summer. (If you watched NY and Paris Fashion Weeks, the trend goes into fall as well.) Your buzzwords are “flowy and frilly.” Everything moves, nothing is tight. Sleeves are full. Pants are wide. Skirts are long and languid. Dresses swirl and twirl.

GIVE THEM THE COLD SHOULDER: Alice + Olivia b/w “cold shoulder” flouncy top & cotton cropped striped pants at; bronze long dress at Neiman Marcus

If you buy one new thing, try a flouncy top, best with a “cold shoulder.” Flattering to all, pair it with either wide-leg pants or narrow cropped jeans or trousers. Wear it loose and floaty or tucked in and blouse-y. If it feels too full, try a big chunky belt around your hips. “Pretty” is a word we haven’t heard in a while, but it fits this season. Gorgeous florals, ruffles, and bows in neutrals mix with dusty pastels or bold color. Metallics are everywhere, adding edge to it all.

“FULLY LOADED,” FASHION’S NEWEST PHRASE: Gucci “fully loaded” blue ankle strap pumps; Valentino embellished black handbag, both at

Another must-have is embellishment. The “fully-loaded” look is on everything at every price. Beading, crystals, feathers, and studs. More is better! Exquisite embroidery and trim is omnipresent. Patches and patchwork look brand new. (How I wish I had my patchwork jacket from high school—if you have yours, dig it out!) Fringe is still in, but go for frayed rather than long fringe, feeling softer and more romantic.

ZIP IT: Gigi Hadid in Tommy x Gigi black, white & red geometric top, black & white bomber jacket & black pants with zippers, from

“Athleisure” becomes a new fashion word. Pants with zippers. Jackets with snaps. Loads of pockets. Oh-so-slouchy. Oh-so-Kim & Kanye. Designed in both athletic and luxe fabrics like cashmere and silk, you will find plenty of knock-offs—this is a very cool look for resort and summer.

LOVE LACE: As winter turns to spring, I’m loving my Michael Kors black lace pants from & Chloe sand silk shirt from Boyds, Philadelphia

Relax and have fun. Indulge now, the best pieces always come in first and resort is a beautiful foreshadow of what is to come for spring and summer. Feminine. Edgy. Sophisticated. Soft. Invest in a few fabulous items, then create new looks every night. Wishing you a wonderful trip—even you are just daydreaming in your closet—enjoy every gorgeous minute~ Ellyn Golder Saft
