FALL FASHION: IT’S ALL ABOUT “ATTITUDE & EDGE!”

I love fall and always have. Crisp air. Crunchy leaves. Beautiful clothes. For me—and many of us with fond memories of back-to-school shopping—it’s all about the clothes. Though spring is often thought to be the season of rebirth, in fashion and art, there’s no season like fall. Stores are overflowing with gorgeous new merchandise. Tough to resist buying something new!

FIERCE FASHION: Isabel Marant burgundy floral dress & black leather belted vest at neimanmarcus.com; Armani royal blue chiffon blouse, velvet jacket & black wide-leg pants at bergdorfgoodman.com

As fall begins, no matter your politics, all agree this is a tumultuous time in the world. Fashion reacts immediately. Vogue.com says: “Fashion has the power to speak without words.” And they are right. Each of us must have a voice—your wardrobe underscores it. This season, everything has a bit of “edge;” everything has “attitude.” Fall fashion becomes fierce and bold. Studs, hardware, embellishment, embroidery, buttons, and big bows. Color is bright. Florals are vibrant. And—like your personality—sparkle is everywhere.

ALL ABOUT ATTITUDE: Me, doing a “style makers” interview for Philadelphia Style magazine, in a Chloe taupe blouse from Boyds Philadelphia, black lace pants from michaelkors.com & chunky black belt from ralphlauren.com, photo by Gene Smirnov; blue & yellow floral dress, full-length black leather gloves & over-the knee biker boots, all from altuzarra.com

It has been years since fashion has dictated one look for all. Like art and design, we each have our opinion of what we love, what we yearn for, what we look best in. No two women are alike; no woman is the same everyday. As a result, though of course there are trends, be true to yourself—everything becomes available everywhere at every price point—as long as you have “attitude,” you’re of-the-moment.

RETRO ROCK STAR GLAM: The greatest star of all, this photo from the 80’s is totally retro & totally modern at once, Princess Diana in a Bruce Oldfield silver evening gown, —no doubt, if she were alive, she’d be just as beautiful & fashionable; Saint Laurent’s crunchy shimmer boots, designer or copy, a “must” for fall, at saintlaurent.com

The “retro-rock-star-glam” look continues. Update last year’s outfits with sparkle, for day as well as evening. It’s amazing how quickly your eye shifts—at first I thought those sparkly boots looked liked an  astronaut, now I think they’re out of this world! Saint Laurent’s crunchy shimmer boot is the ultimate, but the trend is everywhere. Wear them with all black or menswear tweeds and plaids. High, low, scrunchy, or fitted, try on a pair and see if you don’t feel fashionably fabulous instantly.

“SEEING RED:” Jennifer Lawrence in a Ralph Lauren Collection red gown on the cover of September Vogue; Naeem Kahn red sequin evening gown from neimanmarcus.com

Not a sparkle girl? “Seeing red” is no longer reserved for the nightly news; it becomes a fashion slogan too. Another autumn “must-have,” from pink to cherry to burgundy. Another option? Something floral, something flouncy, something feminine—or conversely, something “stolen from the boys.”

FROM THE BOYS: Evan Rachel Wood at the SAG Awards in a navy velvet Altuzarra tuxedo; black leather biker jacket at michaelkors.com

Androgyny is huge. Grab a shirt from your husband or boyfriend’s closet, or at least steal the style. Softening the look makes it more modern. Pair biker jackets and biker boots with ruffles and frills; pair menswear fabrics like hounds tooth and tweed with floaty chiffon blouses.

ON THE EDGE: Christian Louboutin silver cuffed booties from neimanmarcus.com—they look great with your “menswear;” leopard booties and structured handbag from michaelkors.com

Accessories? Think “edge-y.” Boots, booties, and block heels. Handbags are structured, top-handled, or cross-body. The newest are embellished and embroidered with loads of hardware. Designer to discount, an easy way to update your look.

ONE IS NEVER ENOUGH: An array of  jewelry, real & faux, at luxurygaragesale.com; cocktails rings at davidyurman.com

Last, I cannot say it enough: layer your jewelry. One is never enough! Stack your bracelets, wear a ring on every finger, try two necklaces together, indulge in statement earrings. Real or faux, or mix the two—remember, fashion’s buzzword is “sparkly.” This season, you need to sparkle a little everyday!

MIX IT UP: Be careful eating soup in this shirt! Luisa Cerano white silk top with bow sleeves, Etro print jeans & Angela Caputi jewelry, all at Linda Golden, Haverford; See by Chloe floral blouse & Tibi plaid pants from bergdorfgoodman.com

What a wonderful season with something for everyone. Go for something silver or gold, something 70’s rock star glam, something red, something floral and flowy, something “stolen from the guys.” Try a wide-leg pant, a longer, fluid skirt, a block heel. Dreaming of fall, I’m off to open a bottle of red wine (always in fashion!). Here’s to having “attitude,” to having “edge,” here’s to a wonderful Fall 2017 for all—enjoy every gorgeous, glam moment~ Ellyn Golder Saft

ps. Fashion and philanthropy are always a wonderful match! I am loving my new “Mim & Ray” red & black handbag, from mimandray.com. Created and designed by my beautiful cousin Toby Strogatz (left) and her daughter Jen, Mim & Ray handbags are knitted by the amazing seniors at the KleinLife Center in Northeast Philadelphia, with proceeds benefitting the Center. Style with purpose—I cannot imagine a better attitude!
