Hello fashionistas, it’s been awhile! Hoping you are enjoying the warm days, long evenings, and slower pace—as I write this, the weather has turned a bit cooler in Philadelphia, and it feels great. I am yearning for fall. And fall fashion!
CANNOT WAIT TO WEAR GORGEOUS FALL FASHION: Actress Billie Lourd (Carrie Fisher’s daughter) in Gucci “boho glam;” Gucci floral & velvet dress, both in August “Harper’s Bazaar”
SUMMER TURNS TO FALL: Black cotton off-the-shoulder top from monathalheimer.com & white “Prima” jeans from AGJeans.com; navy floral top from Linda Golden, Haverford & black leather jeans from ralphlauren.com
There is nothing I adore more than white jeans—and I love my flowy, boho tops. Yet I’m tired of being wrinkled all the time, pressing those white jeans again and again. Walking through stores overflowing with new merchandise in shades of red and rich florals—I am adoring all things Gucci, and Gucci-ish!—my eye is starting to shift that way. I’m now pairing my white jeans with metallics or bold color, and of course reaching for always-right black & white.
ROCK STAR DISCO GLAM: Cher, on stage in floral Bob Mackie; Liza Minelli in a Halston red sequin jumpsuit—both looks are from the late 70’s, both completely retro & completely of-the-moment!
This is a great time to grab sale pieces you passed on last spring; available everywhere at every price point, the whole “ boho rock star/70’s disco style” continues right into autumn. Envision Cher. And Liza. Everything has a bit of edge. There’s a “cool factor” added this season. Pair floaty blouses with a biker jacket. Wear flouncy tops with leather pants. There are lots of great individual pieces—look for embroidery, embellishment, beading, and velvet—it’s all about “attitude.”
FASHION’S NEWEST BUZZWORD IS “SPARKLY:” The boot to yearn for, Saint Laurent crushy crystal-studded boots & silver sweater at saintlaurent.com; gold dress at michaelkors.com
If you invest in one new thing, buy something sparkly. Silver and gold are omnipresent—worn for day as well as evening. Metallic jackets, blouses, bags, and boots create an easy update. So 70’s. So modern. So rock star chic. The Saint Laurent crushy boot is the “it” boot of the season—real or copied down—already seen all over Paris, this is the meaning of “cool” for Fall 2017.
LOOK LIKE A VALENTINE: (left & right) Valentino dresses & coats in shades of pink & red, all at bergdorfgoodman.com
Your other must is something red—from blush-pink to burgundy and every shade in between. Envision the valentines we all made as kids; that’s your color palette.
STRUCTURE IT: Bottega Veneta grey woven crossbody bags; Prada structured black & gold handbags, all from neimanmarcus.com
Handbags are structured, smaller, and cross-body. Go for studs, grommets, zippers, and chains. The more the better. If you’re one who rarely changes your bag, here’s your daily dose of edge. Same goes for shoes and boots—this is a big boot and bootie year—shimmer and shine make it all brand new. Stilettos are forever, but try a block heel; more comfortable without doubt, with that added dose of edge.
STOLEN FROM THE BOYS: Gigi Hadid with Zayn Malik, both in plaid & floral Dolce & Gabbana, on the cover of August “Vogue;” b/w plaid jacket fur cuffs & gold belt, turquoise pleated skirt & red boots, all at fendi.com
What else? Look for a piece “stolen from the boys.” A plaid jacket, pinstripe pants, an oversized white cotton shirt. Mix it with something feminine—florals, ruffles, lots of jewelry, real or faux. The androgynous look is huge, coming off very “sexy with attitude.”
MORE IS BETTER: Layers of pendants from monicarichkasann.com; stack of bangles from lagos.com
And last, never forget layers and layers of necklaces and bracelets, fingers full of rings, and big statement earrings. My fashion guru, Neiman Marcus vp and fashion director Ken Downing says, “Better bangles clanging than no bangles at all!” I love that. This is a great way to add that sparkle. Mix every variety of necklace and bracelet together at once, I particularly love all the new leather and turquoise bracelets and chokers—so disco, so new.
FEMININE WITH ATTITUDE: The way you want to look this fall, floral dresses from chanel.com; tiered faux-pearl encrusted dress with Louboutin beige suede boots, on the runway at Neiman Marcus
Well readers, I hope I’ve ignited your appetite for fall fashion and all the gorgeous clothes to come. I’ll be back after Labor Day, but wanted you to start dreaming of your own must-haves for the season. In the meantime, enjoy the sunshine and last lazy weeks. I’ll see you in the stores~ Ellyn Golder Saft
ps. Need a new tv binge? On a personal note, if you have a free night as summer winds down, don’t miss “The Jury Speaks,” on Oxygen Channel (channel 123 on Comcast) or “On Demand.” Produced by my daughter Lauren, the 5-episode series examines The OJ Simpson, Michael Jackson, George Zimmerman (Treyvon Martin), Robert Durst (NY real estate heir), and Robert Blake trials from the jurors’ points of view, which is truly fascinating. (If you only watch one, watch OJ.) It’s gotten great reviews—all of my trial lawyer friends commented, “They should use this in trial law class, as a prosecutor, it’s exactly what NOT to do!”
Additionally, look for a nice feature about me in the September/Fall Fashion issue of “Philadelphia Style” magazine, about style-influencers. Cherished readers, thank you for making me a style-influencer!
